What is a Title Only transaction?

A vehicle can be titled in California but registered in another state.

Title-only transactions are designed to allow dealers to obtain title to the lienholder without depending on the customer to complete the registration process.

To complete a title-only transaction, the following documents must be submitted:

- Reg 397 with the temporary operating copy
- Indicate “Title Only” at the top of the Reg 397
- Statement of Facts – section G. This should indicate the method of delivery out of the state (one trip permit, transporter, etc) and where the vehicle will be registered, instructing the DMV to process the transaction as a Title Only.
