Legal Owner vs. Dealer Transfer Tabs

Is legal owner tab different from dealer transfer tab for trade ins?

Understanding the Legal Owner and Dealer Transfer Tabs for Vehicle Transactions

When managing vehicle transactions, it's essential to understand the distinct functions of various tabs in your system. This article will clarify the differences between the legal owner tab and dealer transfer tab, as well as provide guidance on making corrections related to ownership.

Legal Owner Tab

The legal owner tab is primarily used for changing the lienholder on record for a vehicle. This is crucial when there has been a change in financing or if a loan has been paid off.

Lienholder Removal

If you need to remove a lienholder from the title, this can be done through the legal owner tab. The current lienholder must sign off on the front of the title. If there is no longer any lien, you can indicate "NONE" in the lien holder section located on the back of the title.

Name Corrections

Please note that you cannot correct lease ownership directly under this tab. To amend an incorrect lessor name, submit a Name Statement, along with your title documentation, either to SPU (Special Processing Unit) or your local Field Office. It's important to remember that these corrections cannot be made electronically; they require physical submission.

Dealer Transfer Tab

The dealer transfer tab, on the other hand, pertains specifically to transferring ownership between dealerships or from customers during trade-ins. Understanding when and how to use this feature ensures smooth transitions during vehicle exchanges.

Purpose of Title Correction Using Legal Owner Tab

The primary purpose of utilizing the legal owner tab for title correction is to validate and update registration records without altering existing registered owners' information. This process helps maintain accurate and up-to-date records regarding vehicle ownership.

Status of DMV Tab

You may notice that while some tabs are color-coded (such as green), indicating their operational status, others like the DMV tab may not currently appear green due to temporary downtime. Once it becomes operational again, its status will change accordingly.

This guide aims at helping users navigate common tasks effectively within their systems while ensuring compliance with necessary regulations regarding vehicle transactions.
