Replacing Plates: Fee Waiver Options?

Can you send new plates without paying fees?

Transferring Disabled Veteran Plates to a New Vehicle

If you have Disabled Veteran (DV) plates and are looking to transfer them to a new vehicle, there are specific steps you need to follow. Here is how you can do it without incurring any registration fees:

Transfer Process

  1. Visit the efile page on the DMV website.
  2. Select the "Plate With Owner" checkbox.
  3. Choose "Disabled Veteran" as the Plate Type option.
  4. Enter the reassignment information for your Annual Exempt Disabled Veteran plate.
  5. The system will automatically calculate the fees at zero upon completion of this process.

Please note that the DV exemption only applies to one vehicle at a time. If you wish to transfer your DV plates to multiple vehicles, additional fees may apply.

Important Information

If you want new plates along with transferring your DV plates, please be aware that fees will be incurred for the years requested. Remember these key points:

  • If transferring expiring DV plates to a new vehicle, full fees will become due within 30 days from selling your trade-in vehicle based on its selling price.
